A Denver native, Hughes combines classical violin and hip hop to create his own unique sound. The 24-year-old musician began studying classical violin at the age of 3, and by the age of 10, Hughes was a regular soloist with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra. His violin earned him a scholarship to the University of Denver’s Lamont School of Music. It was in college that he developed an affinity for mixing hip hop beats with his classical violin.
Influenced by violinists, Itzhak Perlman, Isaac Stern, and hip hop artists ranging from Rakim to Snoop Dogg, Maestro Hughes developed his own sound and style. For more than 20 years, Hughes has tried to expand the versatility of the violin and diversify its audience. Hughes’ upcoming debut album is the culmination of his commitment. Maestro Hughes is truly giving classical music and contemporary hip hop new meaning.
